PIPS/JDP Program Requirements

Yearly Requirements at a Glance

(Please consult the Graduate Student Handbook and JDP website for complete guidelines)

First Year:

  • Take POP 501 – Survey of Population Problems
  • Take POP 502 -  Research Methods in Demography
  • Take additional POP electives
  • Take Statistics Sequence (2 Full Courses)
  • Take Demography General Exam (May)
  • Attend Notestein seminars 

Second Year:

  • Take JDP sequence (SPIA 590 a-d – 4 Half-Term Courses)
  • Take POP 503 – Evaluation of Demographic Research (Year 2 or 3)
  • Take POP 506 – Responsible Conduct of Research (or approved equivalent) (Year 2 or 3)
  • Take additional POP electives
  • Complete two field exams (one in population subfield; one in inequality)
  • Complete publishable Empirical Paper
  • Precept AI hours
  • Attend Notestein seminars
  • Attend JDP lectures

Third Year:

  • Take POP 503 – Evaluation of Demographic Research (Year 2 or 3)
  • Take POP 506 – Responsible Conduct of Research (or approved equivalent) (Year 2 or 3)
  • Take SPIA 590s – Advanced Empirical Seminar (fall)
  • Take additional POP electives
  • Dissertation Prospectus with Oral Defense (End of Yr 3; latest approval Sept 30, Yr 4)
  • Precept AI hours
  • Attend Notestein seminars
  • Attend JDP lectures

Fourth Year:

  • Work on dissertation research. 
  • Complete Precept AI hours (total of 6 hours for program).
  • Present a Notestein seminar (Yr 4 or 5)
  • Attend Notestein seminars
  • Attend JDP lectures

Fifth Year:

  • Complete and defend dissertation.
  • Present a Notestein seminar (Yr 4 or 5)
  • Attend Notestein seminars
